Jewelry insurance offers financial protection for your most cherished pieces, but you can't have a piece insured if you don't know its value. That's where jewelry appraisal comes in. When you determine the worth of your favorite pieces, you'll be able to choose the best insurance plan for you. You'll also be free to decide if selling might be a better option.
Why Get a Jewelry Appraisal?
One of the main reasons to get your jewelry appraised is for insurance purposes. The jewelry market fluctuates, and your piece may actually be worth more than it was two years ago. To make sure you'll be fully compensated if something happens to it, you will want an up-to-date appraisal and you want to go to a jewelry store you can trust. Your insurance company may also require a current appraisal as part of their terms. They likely won't accept a purchase receipt for the piece.
The Geoffrey's Diamonds Appraisal Process
Our appraisal process starts when we receive the piece. The exact process depends on whether the jewelry has gemstones or not.
For pieces without stones:
The metal is weighed and the piece is examined for its overall condition.. The final value will be determined after looking over the piece and investigating the current market values.
For jewelry with stones:
The overall condition of the piece will be inspected. Each gemstone will be examined to determine quality, size, and other characteristics. Any diamonds will be scrutinized for the 4 Cs: cut, clarity, color, and carat. Cut refers to the exact shape the diamond was cut into, which affects its brilliance. Clarity refers to how clear the diamond is versus the number, size, and visibility of flaws. Color: diamonds are traditionally white or clear, but some stones have a blue, golden brown, or other tint. Carat is the weight of the diamond.

Come Visit Us Today
Our in-store appraisal events allow people in our local community to come in and have their favorite pieces appraised. Appraisals are also available by appointment. When you come in, our experienced gemologists will look over your pieces and document their approximate worth. You'll be given the certification papers that you'll need for your jewelry insurance. It's important to remember that appraisals provide an estimate of a piece's worth at any given time, but these values can change due to the fluctuating precious metals and gemstone market. For this reason, experts recommend having your jewelry reappraised every few years.
